Why one multi-million pound business decided to outsource IT
support
PMG Estates is a Cardiff-based commercial property developer.
Its directors also sit on the board of Cardiff City FC, where the
company is a major club sponsor.
Since PMG is involved in a number of large-scale projects,
including developing a stadium and retail complex for FA Cup
finalists Cardiff City, the company has varied and complex IT
requirements; they pretty much require non-stop technical
support.
This article explains how and why PMG Estates took the decision
to outsource their IT support.
Cost Effectiveness
PMG's decision making process started with the realisation that
with only six current employees, choosing to hire a full-time IT
manager with a salary of over £30,000 a year would not be
cost-effective.
Another factor PMG took into account is their belief that many
in-house IT experts in small firms have vast gaps in their
knowledge, meaning that for a company of their size to employ a
dedicated IT person would not only be expensive but also
inefficient.
IT Priorities
The list of essentials went something like this:
- knowing that the company website and all internal data would be
secure
- being able to access company emails at all times
- knowing that all of the business's applications would be
backed-up and up-to-date
With these assurances in place, the outsourcing involved not
just IT helpdesk support but also e-mail, network security and
website hosting.
The result? PMG are supported by a team with a lot more overall
IT expertise than a single in-house IT manager could match.
One way or another, it's unavoidable to invest a certain amount
of man-hours in IT, and as PMG Estates found out, outsourcing can
be far more cost-effective than hiring someone in-house.
